<a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/45/New_Logo_Gmail.svg/2000px-New_Logo_Gmail.svg.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="145" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/45/New_Logo_Gmail.svg/2000px-New_Logo_Gmail.svg.png" width="200" /></a></div>
I recently found myself in a situation where I needed to cut off all contact with someone. Just the sight of a text or message from them fills me with overpowering emotion that I can't pacify or direct in any meaningful way. My only choice was to escape the contact itself. Turns out that even within the interconnected web of instant messaging and social networks, the most difficult channel to cut off is good old email...<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Some email providers allow you to block an address outright, meaning that the mail server will reject their incoming message, it never gets to you. Gmail has no such feature, you cannot prevent an email from making it into your account.<br />
<br />
If you want to prevent someone from emailing you at your Gmail account, you have three options:<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Block 'em</span></b></h2>
<b><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0PYf5v3yBdvzKfcmd4oRipR1kFYahqiQenT94E0WDH-QPqUJrL895BfB-ZOmFb-zv9sgAyeR3KE8-qzvTSWB90BBlhqv1Y4Q5Iqaed2ngfMkg0Ar_9L7eUitu1USdWjF6QTTboifhyHI/s1600/Block_annotate_020816_112352_PM.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="176" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0PYf5v3yBdvzKfcmd4oRipR1kFYahqiQenT94E0WDH-QPqUJrL895BfB-ZOmFb-zv9sgAyeR3KE8-qzvTSWB90BBlhqv1Y4Q5Iqaed2ngfMkg0Ar_9L7eUitu1USdWjF6QTTboifhyHI/s640/Block_annotate_020816_112352_PM.jpg" width="640" /></a></b><br />
<br />
Gmail has a new 'block' feature that is very easy to use. Browse to a message from the offender, use the drop down menu and select [Block "Person"] All messages from that address will now be moved directly to the spam folder.<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Delete 'em</span></b></h2>
You can also create a filter to automatically delete their messages. First, go to one of the offending messages and then create a filter:<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8hme_YK0ACnjcPFIyS7VC9mtP4DVAVHePKo826DeWsxbMmgYMJEOhmwf6vX6YVS5cYad8aloy08z4APpQS4GtFVwH_utxrCT8NA6yrpDNReag9dF1iX7ZbJOoXyqGTNwY3PZl6S8ix7k/s1600/Block_annotate_020916_100331_PM.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="176" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8hme_YK0ACnjcPFIyS7VC9mtP4DVAVHePKo826DeWsxbMmgYMJEOhmwf6vX6YVS5cYad8aloy08z4APpQS4GtFVwH_utxrCT8NA6yrpDNReag9dF1iX7ZbJOoXyqGTNwY3PZl6S8ix7k/s640/Block_annotate_020916_100331_PM.jpg" width="640" /></a></b><br />
<b><br /></b>
If you are trying to block multiple addresses, select an example of each and create a filter from there<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPFIenasyYHyGaB55d3yWuwgXfG3VzvubhNEYeHKpYOu3fDOHrc1fRKrh6I6kdIailstZumIl-wdTGTm6vAYBe_g8vQeKd8ZXy9qk2tytZuPMM2oyNNxuc27I8E5nHl7Y5tEiqEfM32U8/s1600/delete_020916_101105_PM.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="144" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPFIenasyYHyGaB55d3yWuwgXfG3VzvubhNEYeHKpYOu3fDOHrc1fRKrh6I6kdIailstZumIl-wdTGTm6vAYBe_g8vQeKd8ZXy9qk2tytZuPMM2oyNNxuc27I8E5nHl7Y5tEiqEfM32U8/s640/delete_020916_101105_PM.jpg" width="640" /></a></b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Gmail will perform a test search so you can verify the filter:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh90tWWDcJzl1D6c50V2SA6PL7K_r4xlxfWWhex2BJqBh4GAtA_ecZXHNWFbAyRWvrFvdAxbTHZ8-lzyvTm7T4r5lRw833a_W33wtx0epaSO0zWlDO-Wga6BMN8stuIAuBMPNhwpH_w8AI/s1600/test_search_020916_101953_PM.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh90tWWDcJzl1D6c50V2SA6PL7K_r4xlxfWWhex2BJqBh4GAtA_ecZXHNWFbAyRWvrFvdAxbTHZ8-lzyvTm7T4r5lRw833a_W33wtx0epaSO0zWlDO-Wga6BMN8stuIAuBMPNhwpH_w8AI/s400/test_search_020916_101953_PM.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Select the 'mark as read' and 'delete' actions. If you really want to remove all traces, you can apply it retro-actively: the same actions will be performed for all messages you have already received.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFGuihZivjRWTR79j5s0gDDmLJvRPGYi3-POUnTNPE825xZ9OK8mnmI_FqCC0o70W9XFi7SBP-SIY0UdW1c1DH3ozzc2DbBiBIpDc5GX9X2jRyx4fCApCz9DyTI4t8RNIShVX3w0SfS94/s1600/Screenshot_020916_102325_PM.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFGuihZivjRWTR79j5s0gDDmLJvRPGYi3-POUnTNPE825xZ9OK8mnmI_FqCC0o70W9XFi7SBP-SIY0UdW1c1DH3ozzc2DbBiBIpDc5GX9X2jRyx4fCApCz9DyTI4t8RNIShVX3w0SfS94/s400/Screenshot_020916_102325_PM.jpg" width="400" /></a></b></div>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">The enemy within</span></b></h2>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you've got yourself in this situation, you will probably find that there is a very strong part of you that wants to find these messages, otherwise you wouldn't need to run away, you could stand your ground. The problem with the above two methods is that the messages end up in 'Spam' and 'Trash' folders which are right there in plain sight, too easy to compulsively check. If you do that within 30 days of the message being received, you've put the gun to your own head and pulled the trigger.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For me, the best solution was to Archive ('Mark as read' and 'Skip the Inbox' options above). It requires much more intent to view your archive and messages will get buried very quickly. Unfortunately there isn't a perfect solution that I have found, if you have a better solution please stick it in the comments.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2hDofviOpSrK5s4EB8gnBCfXkVWWT1LmVu5dg_-aMFsTksILDt5XqosypjuC7VGl_N6qpnPJ6y7kyY9ZWmOjEyNuHCRc1tKLDbO0dPm-69EfV5Im6ZFIhULEe-x5CNQgQqa1otLic2V4/s1600/og46c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="After driving the N3 during rush hour a few times a week" border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2hDofviOpSrK5s4EB8gnBCfXkVWWT1LmVu5dg_-aMFsTksILDt5XqosypjuC7VGl_N6qpnPJ6y7kyY9ZWmOjEyNuHCRc1tKLDbO0dPm-69EfV5Im6ZFIhULEe-x5CNQgQqa1otLic2V4/s200/og46c.jpg" title="After driving the N3 during rush hour a few times a week" width="200" /></a><br />
In which we discuss gore, foul language, misleading summaries, Terry Pratchett, death and how many people read this blog.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<ul>
<li>[EDIT] If you put a jump break ^there^ you get an expandable summary </li>
<ul>
<li>but only in the non-dynamic templates</li>
<li>and in order to expand it you have to click through to the full post </li>
</ul>
<li>Having a gory picture on the front page of my blog for a year makes me uncomfortable.</li>
<li>I don't have time to write blog posts</li>
<ul>
<li>However, no-one reads this blog. The issue is moot.</li>
</ul>
<li>I almost never read blogs on the actual blog site, I almost always read in my RSS Client </li>
<ul>
<li>RIP GReader</li>
<li> Feedly FTW</li>
</ul>
<li>But when I do read a blog site: whether the post is about a technical project or home improvement or banal life updates, it's still associated with some structured set of topics and is part of some sort of progression.</li>
<ul>
<li>Archive by date? The whole flipping site is an archive by date</li>
<li>I want categories. Nested Categories. To browse by category. To browse categories.</li>
<li>I want to see a post summary, not scroll through an entire post I don't want to read</li>
</ul>
<li>Insomnia is going to be the death of me.</li>
<li>I like bulleted lists.</li>
<ul>
<li>with nesting</li>
</ul>
<li>Technically, the Terry Pratchett reference was a self-reference. But not anymore.</li>
</ul>

<span style="text-align: start;">I realised if I try do this in a well-considered and thought out approach, it ain't happening. So, without further ado I couldn't resist making a photo-response to </span><a href="http://muddlesomemind.blogspot.com/2012/10/a-slice-of-life.html" style="text-align: start;">this post</a> [sorry :( I have come close a few times doing exactly that]<span style="text-align: start;">. </span></div>

What I learned: if you think to yourself " This is stupid and going to end badly" you probably shouldn't do it. Don't mess with power tools. In thise case a bench saw. While making a wooden 'treasure box' for a friend, more on that when I actually get around to finishing it.<br />
